In terms of working with the kids, my experience has been tremendous. The kids are always willing to give their opions on songs we play them, artists we discuss and the curriculum of the project. The ages of the kids ranges from 13 to 18, yet they all seem to get along really well. The freshmen are just as confident to voice their thoughts as the seniors. When we brake into groups, the kids work well together, they are usually willing collaborators. Denis and Daveon are prime examples of how the kids worked together, within 20 minutes of introducing them to a beat making program, they produced the song that is the centerpiece of our project.
I think our group has developed a bit of a big brother relationship to the kids. We have fun with them and we like to think they have fun with us. We learn from them, as much as they learn from us. Some of their ideas for the song, album cover and label cover are more creative than professionals in the music industry.
Also, working with Rick has gone really well. Rick has been very supportive and even participated in some the lyric writing and performing Parts of the project. I think he is just as excited as the kids to see and hear the final song and documentary.
