Issues at Fades for grades are sometimes getting the students to really expand what they are thinking. Because we have been interviewing the students in groups, they are sometimes shy to really say how they feel. Once you get them one on one or in smaller groups, great content comes out of it. We also currently don't have a set topic, so when we ask questions, they are open ended. This makes it hard for the students to understand what we are asking and they answer in a one-word answer. Yes or no and if its good or bad. Another problem we have been encountering is attendance during the time we have decided to come. Students try to get home before dark and the later it gets, less kids hang around school. Our time is at 4:30-6 pm, but the sun starts to set at 5:15 pm. This makes our group that we work with very limited. If we do want a bigger pool of students to interview and consult, we will need to come at 3-4:30 pm, which is the peak of the after school program with the largest attendance. Overall, Fades for Grades have been amazing and we all really enjoy the program. Our group dynamic is very strong and I think the students at Crenshaw really enjoy our presence.

For the first few weeks, Fades for Grades has definitely been quite an experience. Starting with a large group of boys who were initially shy, the students started to open up to us. Whenever they shared their opinions or thoughts on basically anything you can think of, they always had something insightful to say. However, a couple of issues we started facing definitely included time and focus. As Nikki mentions, every Monday, it seems as though we have to race against the clock. When we try to get more boys to participate in interviewing one another, they would have to leave.
Another issues has definitely been not being able to choose a topic. Because we did not want to choose a topic by ourselves and wanted to include the boys in the process, it made the decision-making that much more difficult because we only got to see them once a week. However, we had high hopes because the boys were very open-minded and gave us many ideas to work with.
